View provisioned capacity details
The provisioned capacity details view provides details about the provisioned capacity including overprovisioning and system resource utilization that is related to provisioning.
About this task
See Understanding resource usage for an overview of resource usage.
Steps
-
Select a storage system running
PowerMaxOS 10 (6079).
The system health dashboard is displayed by default.
- Hover over CAPACITY to view the capacity summary for the storage system.
- Click CAPACITY and select the system or an SRP instance.
-
Click the
Provisioned bar chart to view the provisioned capacity details page.
The provisioned capacity details page displays the following:
- Provisioned - The amount of capacity that has been provisioned (TDEVS created)
- Effective - The total amount of effective capacity
- Percentage Overprovisioned - Provisioned divided by Effective Capacity
- Threshold - user settable value (percentage) at which an alert is generated.
The provisioned percentage is calculated by dividing how much has been provisioned by how much effective capacity is on the SRP. This differs from previous VMAX and PowerMax provisioned calculations that were based on physical capacity. Under the new calculation, it is recommended to keep the provisioned percentage under 200% for FBA, and under 100% for CKD. The SRP Over Provisioning Max Threshold can be changed (see Modify Storage Resource Pool details).
The Warning, Critical and Fatal alert state thresholds associated with the SRP Over Provisioned Capacity threshold can be adjusted in Settings > Alerts > System Thresholds and Alerts .
The System Resources number represents the amount of memory available to support provisioned capacity in the form of metadata. The total value presented will only change if cache is added to the system. The amount used represents just that. The amount free is an indication of how much extra provisioned capacity the system can support. As users create devices, the amount used will increase. When there is a variation between the two values, memory resources are being used to support data reduction or other features that use memory such as taking snapshots of existing devices.
The System Resources chart displays information about the used, free, threshold (linked to the warning threshold of the Provisioned Capacity Resources alert), and the percentage used.
A portion of the metadata is reserved for effective capacity. If you encountering capacity issues, you may want to consider deleting unused storage groups with a significant amount of provisioned space (see View capacity storage group demand details), or alternatively you may want to consider upgrading memory.
When a threshold is breached, an alert is created. The capacity pane on the overview page, the capacity dashboard, and the respective drill-down pages are updated to indicate where a threshold has been breached.
